Create a Free Website -  A Step-by-Step Guide

Welcome to my step-by-step guide on how to create a free website. This process will not take long and can be quite rewarding.

Note: This guide is now outdated as Yahoo! has shut down its GeoCities service. As an alternative, 50Webs is still available. Free websites are not fully reliable, so I highly recommend you save a copy of all your pages on your hard drive (HTML pages take up very little space). In this way, if your web host decides to shut down its services, you can easily switch to a different host and re-upload all your files.

I am going to suggest you host your free website with Yahoo! GeoCities Free, a service provided by the internet company Yahoo!. I have also tried using 50Webs, which puts no advertisements on your website. When using 50Webs, you will get a website under http://username.50webs.com/.

Now, here are the steps to building your website:

1. Go to the Yahoo! GeoCities website. Click on sign up (for GeoCities Free).

,

2. Click on sign up... again.

3. Put in your registration details.

4. Congratulate yourself.

5. Access your email and follow the link to activate.

6. State your "type" of website.

7. Welcome to the control panel.

8. Build your website.

It is now time to build your website full of content. I suggest clicking on "Create a Web Site" (above) in order to use one of Yahoo's useful page-creating tools. First, create the layout for your website at "Yahoo! PageWizards", then you can edit them in a professional way using the point-and-click power of "Yahoo! PageBuilder". Now, you are able to edit pages and make yourself known to the world.

Yahoo also has a special "add-ons" section, allowing users to implement nifty gadgets onto their website. Go to "Create & Update" and click on "Add-Ons". You can now enhance your website with ready-to-go features like maps, guestbooks, and forms. You can even put the date on your website which updates itself when it's a new day. Some of the add-ons are dodgy (from my personal experience), so be wary of these: New Headlines and Weather.

9. Now you can log in and edit your website whenever you like.
